SHIPPING CONTAINER PRODUCTS

Shipping containers are locked together by twist locks located at the corner castings of each container.  The height of stacked containers, either onboard ship or on dry land, presents hazards for personnel moving on the containers or working on ship decks adjacent to open hatch covers.  Winsafe Corp. addresses safety issues in this work environment through 3 types of anchor wands.

This innovative product line for the shipping industry features the following advantages:

  • Enables workers to tie off safely before reaching 3’ of the leading container edge;
  • Attaches to the top or top end holes of container corner castings;
  • User-friendly, utilizing a cast aluminum grip handle to lock and release wand;
  • Light-weight (5 lbs. or 2.3 kgs.) with the availability of carry bags for easy portability;
  • Color coded for easy identification; and
  • Meets OSHA and ANSI requirements for fall protection systems and CE certifications in Europe.

GM120 Top Lock Anchor Wand

The GM120 Top Lock Anchor Wand is a hand-held anchorage connector that locks into the top hole of steel corner castings on shipping containers.  It features a tie-off swivel plate that rotates 360 degrees and is color coded yellow for easy identification.  The Top Lock Anchor Wand must be used with a self-retracting lifeline rated at a maximum arrest of 900 lbs. (4kN) or less, attached at the back of the harness and at the anchor eye on the head of the wand.

To utilize the GM120, the worker on top of the shipping container approaches the corner casting at a 45 degree angle from the side and leading edges.  He reaches out a maximum of a full arm’s length and squeezes the wand handle to insert the jaws into the top hole of the casting.  The jaws lock into position with a click, and the worker then maneuvers the handle to ensure the head is locked into the casting.

With the wand locked into position, the worker can then move to the corner of the shipping container and perform the required task.  Upon completion of his task, the worker retreats at least 3 ft. from the container leading edge and disengages the wand by squeezing the handle and lifting the wand from the corner casting.

The GM120 wand also provides protection for workers approaching open hatch covers by locking into a deck casting top hole.

GM121 End Lock Anchor Wand

The GM121 End Lock Anchor Wand, or Lasher Wand, is a hand-held anchorage connector that locks into the end hole of steel corner castings on shipping containers.  The GM121 also features a tie-off swivel plate that rotates 360 degrees and is color coded red for easy identification.  Like the GM120, it must be used with a self-retracting lifeline rated at a maximum arrest force (M.A.F.) of 900 lbs. (4kN) or less, attached to both the back of the harness and the anchor eye on the head of the wand.

The GM121 End Lock Anchor Wand is used to protect lashers when working on the end of containers.  It also provides protection for workers approaching open hatch covers by locking into a deck casting end hole.  It may additionally be used to protect mechanics working on reefer units.

GM184 Top Access End Lock Anchor Wand

The GM184 Top Access End Lock Anchor Wand is another hand-held anchorage connector that locks into the end hole of steel corner casting but from the top of the shipping container, even when twist locks are in place. It is color coded orange and, like the GM120 and GM121, must be used in conjunction with a self-retracting lifeline rated at a M.A.F. of 900 lbs. (4kN) or less.

GM681 Rescue Kit

The Fallsoft® Container Top Rescue Kit is designed to rescue a worker who has fallen from a shipping container and is suspended by his self-retracting lifeline.  The Kit works in conjunction with the GM120 Top Lock Anchor Wand that the fallen worker is tied off to by his SRL.  Light-weight and easy to use, the GM681 is an industry first!

The Kit has 3 easy-to-use parts:

  • Telescopic Pole:  The Pole is adjustable from 5-1/4; (160cm) to 9-1/4’ (282cm).  It features a smooth, fiberglass handle with a rubberized grip, a tri-oval, anodized aluminum slider, and a patented, positive locking device.
  • Polyester Rope and Snap Hooks:  The Rope is 20’ (600cm) of 7/16” low stretch, double-braided polyester with an aluminum snap hook on one end and an alloy steel snap hook on the other end.
  • Snap Hook Retainer:  An aluminum Snap Hook Retainer on the end of the pole secures the aluminum snap hook on the Rope.

When rescuing the fallen worker, the rescuer inserts the snap hook retainer to the end of the telescopic pole and connects the aluminum snap hook on the rope to the retainer.  Positioned on top of the container, the rescuer then extends the pole to the fallen worker and hooks the aluminum snap hook to the D-ring of the fallen worker’s harness.

Once the Aluminum Snap Hook is connected to the fallen worker’s D-ring, the rescuer releases the Pole from the Rope and Snap Hooks by giving a firm tug to the pole.  With the pole disengaged from the Kit, the rescue worker connects the alloy steel hook to the rescuing crane, and the fallen worker is lifted to safety.

GM159 Horizontal Lifeline System

For customers presently using the GM120 Top Lock Container Wand, here is an added safety system manufactured by Winsafe Corp.  This system is designed for fall protection atop of 40-foot or 20-foot long shipping containers, to be used in conjunction with the GM120 Top Lock Anchor Wand (Yellow). The Horizontal Lifeline System attaches to the SRL and is anchored at the base of the GM120. An anchor wand is then inserted into the corner casting located at each end of the container top on opposite box sides, providing a corner-to-corner horizontal lifeline. The addition of this system to your anchor wand equipment enables stevedores to maneuver freely about the entire surface of the container surface! No longer do they have to be limited by the length of their SRL. Note: The recommended number of workers attached at any one time is 2.

The lifeline system is comprised of one 3/8” galvanized wire cable, two attachment carabineers, and two GM120 Top Lock Container Wands. Workers connect directly to the horizontal lifeline by attaching the double lock snap (located on the end of their back-mounted SRL) to the lifeline cable. The double lock snap will move freely along the cable, following the movement of the worker.
